Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

You will be part of a research group under the unit for Cardiovascular and Nutritional Epidemiology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine. The research group's work is focused on increasing knowledge about the causes of chronic diseases, mainly cardiovascular diseases. Our research is epidemiological and uses data from cohorts, questionnaire data and biomarkers, as well as information from population registers and health registers. Women and men are usually studied separately, with reference to the fact that gender and biological sex can affect the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Within the research group and within the unit, we have a good collaboration and a lot of space is given for stimulating research discussions.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

Completing a doctoral program means engaging in a research project under the guidance of a group of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. The research work includes scientific writing and oral presentations of research results in various contexts. The doctoral student also participates in courses and writes a thesis. After completing his or her doctoral studies at Karolinska Institutet, the student is expected to have developed an advanced knowledge of medical science, scientific methodology and cutting-edge competence in a specific research area. For this project, the student will use research tools in epidemiology and biostatistics to investigate how menopausal symptoms, premenstrual disorders, and pregnancy-related complications relate to cardiovascular risk. The project also includes studies of cardiovascular risk linked to treatment with female sex hormones. The work in the project will be characterized by collaboration, both within the research group but also with researchers - both junior and senior - outside the research group. Towards the end of the doctoral student period, the doctoral student is expected to contribute, to a certain extent, to teaching epidemiology or other public health-related subjects.
