Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The Department of Clinical Science and Education, Södersjukhuset, pursues undergraduate education, research education and internationally recognized research focusing on common diseases and injuries. The goal of all activities is to improve human Health.

The NeuroCardioMetabol group is led by Associate Professor Cesare Patrone and Professor Thomas Nyström. Senior Researcher Vladimer Darsalia is responsible of the preclinical in vivo activities in animal models of stroke and diabetes. Our research focus is on the pathophysiological mechanisms at the basis of the complications of diabetes such as stroke, endothelial dysfunction, heart failure and dementia. The identification of new therapies, with special focus on the effects mediated by incretins is an important part of our research. Our research is translational as we employ clinically relevant preclinical experimental models in parallel to randomized clinical studies and epidemiological research.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The mechanisms at the basis of why the recovery after stroke is diminished in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are largely unknown and need to be identified. The Ph.D. project aims to advance the knowledge in this field and will consist of performing stroke studies in rodent models of T2D in order to understand how T2D affects recovery after stroke as well as to identify efficacious therapies. The studies will consist in growing a colony of mice that will become diabetic under experimental conditions. We will then treat these mice with different pharmacological strategies before inducing stroke and follow their recovery by using behavioral test. Brains will be collected and analyzed with immunocytochemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and statistical methods. The student will learn all these methods practically and also how to interpret the results.
