Karolinska Institutet, the Department of Medicine, Huddinge

The Department of Medicine at Huddinge comprises of seven units, three research center, and a total of around 70 independent research groups. Our ambition is to be leading department within medical research and education.

Description of the work group/equivalent and its work/focus
The research group is headed by Niklas Björkström, and is active at the Center for Infectious Medicine, Karolinska Institutet Huddinge. The research group is focused on studying the function of innate lymphoid cells such as NK cells and their role in human liver disorders and infections. Our research group studies primary lymphocytes obtained from patients with different liver diseases. We study these lymphocytes using cutting edge techniques such as advanced flow cytometry, microscopy, and RNA expression analysis. To provide mechanistic insight into lymphocyte function, we utilize and develop in vitro cell assays.

Duties

  1. Experiments on human primary lymphocytes and tissue samples from patients.
  2. Techniques for cellular and molecular biology (flow cytometry (analysis and sorting), RNA expression analysis, in vitro cell assaying, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, ELISA, etc.) The successful candidate is expected to play a critical role in formulating scientific research hypotheses, testing the hypotheses using proper study design, analyzing the data, presenting and interpreting the results, and writing scientific reports and articles in English

Qualifications
To qualify, the applicant must have a PhD in immunology or equivalent. Merit is given to applicants who are experienced in multicolor flow cytometric analysis, have previous experience working with human NK cells, and immunovirology. The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills and ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Fluency in English is a requirement. To be eligible, an applicant must hold a PhD (third-cycle) degree.

Karolinska Institutet applies the following assessment criteria:

- Documented subject knowledge of significance to the research project

- Analytical skills confirmed by a scientific dissertation or the equivalent

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
