The Department of Oncology-Pathology conducts basic, translational, and clinical research together with educational activities related to cancer. The department consists of more than 30 research groups localized at the Bioclinicum facility, Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) and Karolinska University Hospital, Solna. We are seeking a highly motivated applicants whose activities relate to basic cancer research on clinically relevant issues and have a clear focus on patient benefit. We are interested in candidates pursuing research centered upon gaining a better understanding of commonly used cancer therapies, in particular conventional antimetabolite therapies of importance in acute leukemias, their modes-of-action and resistance mechanisms, and leveraging this information to propose strategies to refine their clinical use. We welcome candidates employing multi-disciplinary approaches, such as combining biochemical and biophysical methods to understand enzyme structure-function, together with cell biology to define underpinning molecular mechanisms of biological phenomena through both hypothesis-driven and hypothesis-free approaches. Previous experience and documented expertise in the research areas of genome stability and nucleotide metabolism, and the relation of these to cancer biology and chemotherapy mechanism-of-action, is key.
