Our research

The Reinius lab investigates fundamental aspects of gene regulation, and have a particular edge in X-chromosome inactivation and dosage compensation. Female cells contain two X chromosomes while male cells contain only one, and to balance the X-gene dose in female cells one X-chromosome copy is kept transcriptionally silenced by the process of X-inactivation. At the same time, the remaining active X chromosome is hyper activated to balance the gene dose with the diploid autosomal part of the genome. Because of these chromosome-wide features, the X-chromosome is a remarkable system for dissecting major mechanisms of transcriptional regulation. By characterizing the states and epigenetic framework of X-chromosome inactivation, we reveal key features of transcriptional regulation and systems biology.

Reinius and colleagues recently pioneered the use of single-cell RNA-seq in the study of X-inactivation (Science 2014, Nature Reviews Genetics 2015, Cell 2016, Nature Genetics 2016, bioRxiv 2019 etc., see Publications on our Lab webpage). To expose mechanisms of dosage compensation, we employ newly developed concepts and molecular techniques, including single-cell RNA-sequencing, chromatin accessibility and modification assays, mouse transgenics, and advanced computational methods for the analysis of allele-specific gene expression. The expected outcome of the research is of broad biological significance, and has the potential to reveal molecular mechanisms underlying variable expressivity and incomplete penetrance of X-linked genetic disorders.

You have

  • PhD and publications in a relevant field (first-author paper(s) is a requirement).
  • Fascination in Molecular Biology and a strong interest to resolve fundamental questions of gene regulation.
  • The ability to solve problems independently.
  • Team spirit and good communication abilities in spoken and written English.
  • The computational postdoc has sound skills in R or Python programming. Ideally experienced in transcriptomics, systems genomics or statistical genetics.
  • The wet-lab-oriented postdoc has excellent lab skills and knowledge in molecular biology. Previous experiences that are particularly meriting are RNA/DNA sequencing, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, in situ hybridization, cell culturing, and mouse/animal work (FELASA certificate).

We offer

  • A vibrant research environment in a young yet-already-successful lab, located at a top-ranked international research institute.
  • Freedom to develop your own ideas and projects within the scope of the lab.
  • Excellent training opportunities.
  • Access to state-of-the-arts equipment and computational resources (a dedicated computational server and sequencing facilities are available).
  • Direct and continuously access to primary data of highest quality, generated in the lab.
