The Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM) is one of the six units of the Department of Medicine, Huddinge. Description of the subject area

Our research group investigates the underlying immunopathogenic mechanisms in human infectious, inflammatory and neoplastic diseases. The successful applicant will conduct research and education with focus on myeloid immune cells in infectious and inflammatory diseases. The Senior Research Specialist shall conduct research to elucidate the role of myeloid cells focusing on granulocytes in the pathology of various diseases, such as sepsis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease and Langerhans cell histiocytosis aiming at providing  tools for the design of more efficient diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Your mission

We are looking for a researcher with a clear ambition to lead an independent research line within the subject area. The Senior Research Specialist will be expected to independently head projects on basic and translational research aimed to characterise phenotypically and functionally the granulocytes in various tissues and diseases using technologies such as multicolour flow cytometry, cell sorting, high-resolution microscopy, single cell RNA sequencing approaches etc. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with other members of the group and with national and international collaborators and contribute significantly to a productive research environment. In addition, the candidate is expected to obtain additional independent funding, supervise students and participate in research education.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Senior Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent expertise with significant scientific production in the field of cancer and immunology, with a particular focus on myeloid cells. In addition the applicant must must have received funding in competition. The applicant must also have demonstrated a clear scientific independence to which their own contribution has been significant and a research plan of high quality with clear potential for the future.

The Senior Research Specialist candidate is expected to have post doctoral experience and additional research experience as Assistant professor (or similar) for at least 4 years. The successful applicant should have a strong background in cancer research, in molecular and cellular biology and in human immunology. Previous work relevant to human myeloid immune cells including granulocytes as well as research on Langerhans cell histiocytosis, inflammatory bowel disease or psoriasis are necessary. Documented experience from working with patient material is highly advantageous.

For employment as Senior Research Specialist at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Rules regarding other positions than teaching positions are applied in relation to the established profile of employment.

  • Scientific original publications, their quality and quantity, with special consideration on publications after the doctoral education.
  • Scientific independent ability demonstrated through leading/corresponding author positions.
  • Other scientific publications.
  • Presentations at international congresses.
  • Research grants received in competition.
  • National and international research collaborations.
  • Research responsibility as supervisor for degree project on advanced level, doctoral student or postdoc.
  • Research experience from a research group other than where the doctoral education was conducted.
  • Development of one's own research profile within the subject area.
  • Plan for future research based on current science and the applicant’s own independent research questions.

It is required  that the applicant has

  • Documented experience with multicolour flow cytometry, including analysis and data visualization with Flowjo and plugins for dimensionality reduction (eg UMAP), unsupervised clustering (eg Phenograph, FlowSom) etc.
  • Experience with cell sorting.
  • Experience with scRNA techniques, including 10X genomics.
  • Experience with translational research focused on patient materials.
  • Excellent skills in written and spoken English and experience in grant application writing and acquisition of funding in competition.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has

  • Scientific independency, demonstrated through leading/corresponding author positions on peer-review articles of relevance to the research area
  • Research responsibility as main or co-supervisor for degree project students on advanced level, doctoral students or postdocs.
  • Research experience from a research group other than where the doctoral education was conducted.
  • Good organization skills and be able to work both independently and as a member of a collaborative network.
  • Taken at least 5 weeks of pedagogy courses for higher education.
  • Experience in teaching and organization of pedagogical activities.
