To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The research group
The doctoral student position is located at Aging Research Center (ARC), within the social gerontology group, belonging to the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society. The group uses cross-sectional and longitudinal data from interview studies and registers to study ageing and older people’s living conditions. Currently, the research group is working with multiple scientific questions on topics such as older people’s health; health trends at the population level, medical and social services and multiple aspects of inequalities at the group level.
The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
The doctoral student will be working on two projects ”Cash and Care. Intergenerational transfers in the families of the oldest-old and their consequences for inequality” and “Health and mortality in older Europeans – a matter of cash and care?”
The overall aim of the project is to examine how inequalities are shaped and responded to by families through transfers of money (cash) and time (care) between older adults and their adult children. Transfers will be examined in the context of broader societal changes and welfare state programs.
The student will together with the supervisors, within the framework of this project, develop more specific research questions for the doctoral thesis. With the support of supervisors, the student will perform statistical analyses of existing longitudinal data and write up the results of each study for publication in peer reviewed journals.
The doctoral student will attend courses and seminars at doctoral level, present the research at scientific conferences, learn to compile and analyse data in different ways, write scientific articles, and participate in scientific activities such as research group meetings and seminar series.
