Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking to recruit a genetic specialist in the Group of Johan Grunewald in the Respiratory Medicine Division to work on sarcoidosis projects to explore genetic variation across population ancestries associated with disease risk and sarcoidosis target organ phenotypes. Specifically, the successful candidate will lead consortium efforts and statistical analyses using large genomic datasets to examine disease genetic risk and elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying disease pathobiology.

The specialist will work with national and international collaborators to conduct large-scale genome-wide association studies to identify genetic variants associated with disease risk and test the hypothesis that genetic variation is a central component of the disease’s genetic architecture.

The specialist should also have experience in conducting genome-wide association studies, gene-environment interaction studies, and applying other genetic approaches, as well as be able to expand the research field. The research specialist will be responsible for leading the research field, processing large genomic datasets, running analyses, and disseminating results to the scientific community.

Your mission

The post will include:

  • Lead the genomic research in sarcoidosis and explore other molecular phenotypes that can lead to new discoveries in the field
  • Experienced computational geneticist who is excited about the opportunity to establish collaborations for data-driven projects and lead the analyses of novel and existing datasets generated by our lab
  • Research, teaching, and administration duties as a genetic specialist in clinical and biomedical sciences
  • Supporting the department in extending the profile of this research area by attracting and supervising postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate research students, contributing towards the winning of significant research income, and undertaking elements of the day-to-day running of undergraduate and postgraduate programs
  • Collaborating with colleagues both nationally and internationally to develop and support the group research programs and other cognate research programs across the Faculty
  • Contributing to the general operation of the Faculty as a member of its academic

Eligibility requirements

PhD in statistical genetics, molecular medicine, or a related discipline with a computational/quantitative background.

The candidate has demonstrated good research expertise with significant scientific production.

The candidate has demonstrated good scientific independence, to which his/her contribution has been significant in the genetics of sarcoidosis.

Candidate has a research plan of high quality with clear future potential.

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

The candidate ideally has experience in sarcoidosis genetics and has a keen interest in complex diseases in pulmonary medicine and in the following:

  • Experience in statistical genetics, generation, or analysis of high-throughput genetic and genomic data.
  • Experience in large-scale genetic data and biomarker analysis.
  • Experience in bronchoalveolar cell analysis.
  • Experience in programming skills in R and/or Python as well as proficiency with bash/shell scripting and with Unix/Linux environment.
  • Able to establish national and international collaborations.
  • Has presented and/or scientific assignments at national and international congresses.
  • Has received research grants in regional, national, and international competition.
  • Has been a reviewer and/or evaluator of the scientific work of others.
  • Has developed his/her own research profile within the area of genetics of sarcoidosis.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • English proficiency (written and spoken)
  • Writing scientific publications and reports
  • Ability to manage and work as part of a team
  • Has Plan for future research based on current science

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
