Research group

The National Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention of Mental Ill-Health (NASP) is located at the Karolinska Institutet Solna Campus. Since 1993, NASP has been the Swedish national and Stockholm regional advisor on suicide research and prevention against mental ill health. At NASP, there is an international and dynamic research environment focusing on mental health promotion and suicide prevention, primarily from the public health perspective. NASP is also continuously involved in teaching and implementation activities, in Sweden and abroad. The concurrent involvement in teaching, research and implementation activities in the field of suicide prevention and mental health promotion provides NASP with a unique opportunity for knowledge translation where research is closely informed by implementation and vice versa. This environment is of high value for PhD students because it allows them to experience not only the research component of their studies but also how research translates in actual practice.

NASP is also the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research, Training and Methods Development in Suicide Prevention and has a very strong international perspective with participation in several international networks of researchers. These include the World Psychiatric Association, the European Psychiatric Association and a number of European research Consortia that NASP created or in which participated.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The PhD student will work on knowledge and data gathered through the research project: NEurobehavioural predictiVE and peRsonalised Modelling of depressive symptoms duriNg primary somatic Diseases with ICT-enabled self-management procedures (NEVERMIND). NEVERMIND has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and is designed to use technology to empower people who suffer from symptoms of depression related to serious somatic diseases like breast and prostate cancer, myocardial infarction and severe diabetes. The aim of the project is to place the patients at the centre of their mental healthcare through use of a smartphone app and lightweight sensitized shirt that collects data about their mental and physical health and gives them effective feedback. Based on the personalized data collected, suggestions are be made to the patient encouraging them to alter activities or lifestyle to reduce the occurrence and severity of depressive symptoms.

The PhD project will focus on implementation research on the factors that determine the acceptability, usability, and satisfaction of the NEVERMIND self-management eHealth intervention in dealing with depressive symptoms in the target groups of patients. In particular, the PhD student will investigate the barriers and facilitators of the implementation of eHealth interventions in clinical practice.
