Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för Medicinsk biokemi och biofysik, Molecular Structural Biology

Description of research group and project:
Possibly more than 50% of the human genome codes for non-coding RNA. These RNAs are ubiquitous among all life forms and the mechanisms how non-coding RNAs regulate these cellular functions are largely unknown.
Our research group is interested in understanding how RNAs adopt their structures in order to select specific functions in a pool if RNAs. We employ different biochemical and biophysical techniques (e.g. EMSA, NMR, UV melting experiments), to investigate the molecular mechanism of RNA function (Nature 2012 & 2015).

Project:
We look for a research assistant for an interdisciplinary project studying ribosomal RNA and the person will therefore be working on an interface from biochemistry to biophysical methods. The project aims to study structure & dynamics of ribosomal RNA and establish and develop biophysical and biochemistry methods for this task.
The a research assistant will work on RNAs addressing biological questions studied in the lab. You will work in a team together with other lab members and regularly present your research work in lab-meetings, seminars and at international conferences.
We are looking for a highly motivated, well organized, driven and enthusiastic person interested in our area of research, whom is ready to explore new avenues in science. The candidate should have a high degree of independence but should also show a collaborative approach to research and be able to work productively in a team.

The Department:
The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics conducts a broad spectrum of biomedical research and education within medical biochemistry and biophysics. Presently our department consists of 12 research divisions with a total of approximately 450 employees.
We are looking for a highly motivated a research assistant that will work in Katja Petzold’s group at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics.

A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis the following parameters:

- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research
: Experience with laboratory work in RNA biochemistry for structural sample preparation and previous work with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), python programming and RNA structural biology are of great advantage.

- Analytical skill

- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to the subject

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.
