The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Clinical Geriatric, with over 100 employed and affiliated researchers are located both in Neo, Campus Flemingsberg and in the Q-building in Solna. We conduct research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. Our research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The division has a close cooperation with the Medical Unit Aging within Theme Inflammation and Aging at Karolinska University Hospital.

We are hiring an Assistant Professor who will join the team of Associate Professor Shireen Sindi, who works within the Nordic Brain Network (NBN), which is part of the division of Clinical Geriatrics, Center for Alzheimer Research, NVS. The NBN carries out research focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. 

Within this network, Dr. Sindi conducts research on sex differences in dementia and Alzheimer’s research, and the underlying mechanisms.  As part of a project recently funded through Wellcome-Leap Care, the goal is to investigate the associations between hormonal and reproductive factors (e.g. hormonal therapies, reproductive history, menopause) and the mechanisms by which they are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. These include neuroimaging correlates, Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers measures in cerebrospinal fluid or plasma (beta amyloid, tau), genetics, among other markers. This research will also aid in identifying individuals at risk for dementia, and inform future multidomain preventive interventions.

Your mission 

This Assistant Professor position offers a unique opportunity to build a strong academic profile—primarily by developing your independence as a researcher, while also gaining valuable teaching and pedagogical experience.

The candidate will conduct research according to the project goals described above and will be responsible for:

  • Research projects leadership and management
  • Seek future funding by drafting and submitting funding applications to various agencies
  • Supervise postdoctoral fellows
  • Supervise students at the Master and Doctoral levels
  • Data processing and management of multi-cohort datasets
  • Conduct and support statistical analyses
  • Interpretation of the results
  • Preparing and submitting manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Presenting the results in relevant seminars and conferences
  • Maintain regular communication between different collaborating centres to share recent results and updates
  • Integrate the expertise from different group members

This is a full-time (100%) position for 4 years.

Eligibility requirements 

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than seven years, normally, prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor. 

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist.  

Special grounds refer to: 

  • parental leave, 
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations 
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces 
  • long-term illness 

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

It is a requirement that you have completed three weeks of courses on teaching in higher education as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment. 

We are seeking an early-career researcher with postdoctoral experience and a PhD in epidemiology, data science, or a related field, with solid statistical expertise and the ability to lead and manage all aspects of research projects, independently handle multi-cohort data, as well as perform data cleaning and statistical analyses. Preference will be given to applicants with experience working with older populations, harmonizing data from multiple cohorts, managing data in population-based cohorts, and advanced knowledge of statistical methods for investigating cognitive impairment/dementia, sex differences, and biomarkers, including neuroimaging and fluid biomarkers. The role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively. Being fluent in spoken and written English is required.

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer.  Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
