Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

MTC is looking for a post-doctoral computational scientist to join Professor Gunilla Karlsson Hedestam's group to contribute to the group's project concerning the analysis of immune repertoires and variation in adaptive immune receptor genes from Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data. The group's goal is to increase our understanding of how inherited variations in T and B cell receptor genes influence the diversity and function of adaptive immune responses.

Your mission

Modern immunology research generates large datasets from high-throughput sequencing techniques. The Karlsson Hedestam group analyzes highly diverse adaptive immune receptor repertoires and studies the role of germline-encoded polymorphism for antigen-specific responses. The group is now seeking a post-doctoral scientist who is interested in using these large datasets for in-depth investigations about how the adaptive immune response differs between persons. Specifically, the group is looking for a computational scientist with experience in data analysis, statistics, and visualization. The appointment is for a purely computational scientist. It will not involve any wet lab work.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

A selection will be made among qualified applicants using the following bases of assessment:

  • A Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a closely related field
  • At least 5 years’ experience working with data analysis and bioinformatic analysis
  • Strong interdisciplinary foundation bridging immunology and computer science, with a deep understanding of probability theory, advanced statistics, and statistical modeling
  • Proven expertise in adaptive immune receptor and repertoire analysis using machine learning and statistical methods
  • In-depth knowledge of T-cell and B-cell receptor biology, along with adaptive immune repertoire sequencing data preprocessing
  • Experience in developing computational methods for analyzing high-dimensional biological data
  • Experienced in relevant programming languages and skills in data science (data cleaning, scripting, visualization, etc)
  • Advanced proficiency in Python, R, and Bash, with experience using GitHub or related version control systems
  • Experience working in Linux environments and high-performance computing systems
  • Demonstrated success in interdisciplinary collaborations with both experimental and computational teams
  • Motivated, independent, and well-organized with excellent communication skills in spoken and written English
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment
  • Highly driven and motivated to solve problems, and able to work independently while also being able to communicate effectively with other members of the team
