Welcome to an internationally leading research environment in in vivo medical imaging at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Solna, Karolinska Institutet (KI). Here you will have the opportunity to develop your research in neurodegenerative diseases and evaluate new methods in molecular imaging technology. You will have the chance to work closely with top researchers at the newly established Center for Imaging Research, in a stimulating scientific environment that intergrates researchers and infrastructure from Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital, and biotechnology companies, focusing on radiochemistry development, preclinical and clinical studies, and multi-modal imaging techniques.   

Your mission 

As Assistant Professor, you will be responsible for leading ongoing research projects on the application of multimodal imaging techniques in clinical and preclinical studies. You will work with preclinical and clinical development and evaluation of new radioligands and quantification methods, as well as conduct clinical studies and drug trials where imaging technology plays a crucial role in evaluating the underlying biology. You will also be responsible for funding doctoral students and your own research.

The work includes:

  • Organizing, financing, and conducting preclinical and clinical studies, clinical trials, and method development projects using imaging technology.
  • Being responsible for analysis and management of data in academic and industry-sponsored studies.
  • Being responsible for establishing study designs, applying for regulatory approvals from the ethical review authority and the Swedish medical products agency, in order to initiative and run clinical studies and research projects.
  • Being responsible for supervising students.
  • Leading research and other researchers in method development, method evaluation, and analysis of imaging data.
  • Coordinating patient recruitment and study logistics with clinical staff from e.g., hospital memory clinics.
  • Being responsible for writing and seeking grants to cover research costs, administrative fees, indirect costs, and salary costs.
  • Collaborating with national and international researchers and participate in research networks.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer. 

Eligibility requirements 

To be eligible for this position you need to fulfil the following requirements:

  • Licenced clinical psychologist or MD with a PhD.
  • Experience in organizing and financing clinical trials of drug candidates for neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Plenty of experience in image analysis and method development or method evaluation for molecular imaging techniques.
  • Plenty of experience in pharmacokinetic modeling of positron emission tomography data from several different radioligands.
  • Experience of being principle and co-supervisor of doctoral students.
  • Having, as main applicant, obtained research funding in competition within the area of research of the position.
  • Very good spoken and written knowledge of Swedish and English.

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor. 

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist.  

Special grounds refer to: 

  • parental leave, 
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations 
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces 
  • long-term illness 

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Bases of assessment 

In evaluating the applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on previous merits in the relevant field, scientific expertise and proficiency, as well as personal suitability and ability to work independently and in a team.

It is particularly meritorious if the applicant has:

  • Conducted clinical research using multi-modal imaging techniques.
  • Carried out research on method development of molecular imaging techniques and their application in clinical studies.
  • Have ongoing international and national research collaborations.
  • Published several scientific articles as first or last author in addition to articles included in their dissertation.
  • Completed an extended post-doc stay at a university or university hospital outside of Karolinska Institutet and Sweden.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
