The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.

ARC has a strong focus on research and has unique research resources available, including large-scale longitudinal studies such as the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K) and The Swedish Panel Study of Living Conditions of the Oldest Old (SWEOLD). Since 2018 ARC is also leading the national infrastructure on aging research NEAR (near-aging.se).

Your mission

The Principal Researcher will contribute to the ongoing activities at ARC by carrying out research in the field of epidemiology of aging, and more specifically on the themes of multimorbidity and frailty. A major task for the successful applicant will be developing new projects and acquiring external grants within this research frame. The position also involves a high level of engagement in education, including teaching and supervising doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding.  The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

  • Educational background in medicine and epidemiology.
  • Long-standing experience with quantitative research on aging.
  • Qualified experience with research on epidemiology of aging.
  • Experience in driving population-based and register-based studies.
  • Consolidated national and international research network.
  • Publications in high-impact international journals.
  • Successful track record of funding acquisition.
  • Experience with doctoral and postdoctoral supervision.
  • Teaching experience at all levels of education.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Clinical experience within the field of geriatrics.
  • An established track record of research in the area of geriatric epidemiology.
  • Long-standing experience in research on risk factors, consequences and care of age-related health conditions, with a focus on multimorbidity and frailty.
  • A track record of publications on epidemiology of aging, and in particular on multimorbidity and frailty, in high-impact international journals.
  • Established and active international collaborations on health complexity in aging, with a focus on multimorbidity and frailty.
  • Demonstrable experience of obtaining substantial funding as principal investigator from agencies.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Leading experience across population-based and register-based studies in the field of epidemiology of ageing.
  • Documented training in epidemiological and statistical methods.
  • Prior experience in supervising as main supervisor doctoral and postdoctoral students.
