Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven departments in which both research and teaching are conducted. The department is involved in advanced research in both basic and applied research. All departments work in close contact with clinics at Karolinska University Hospital. The department's educational activities contribute to most programs and courses within KI's total educational offerings.

The Division of Clinical Chemistry conducts research focusing on cardiometabolic diseases, integrating contemporary basic research, clinical medicine and translational research.

The division is currently seeking a senior researcher for a position (50%) until further notice.

Your mission

Our research aims to advance the understanding of complex diseases through an integrated systems biology approach combining both advanced experimental and bioinformatics computational techniques.
As a senior scientist, you will conduct cutting-edge innovative experimental research - which will include mass spectrometry platforms, sequencing library construction and overseeing the development of novel genetically modified mouse models - as well as lead the construction of deep learning pipelines for single-cell and spatial (transcript)omics analyses. This role is critical to pushing the boundaries of precision medicine, ultimately leading to improved diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions in a wide range of complex metabolism-related disease states.

In addition to leading research initiatives, you will play a crucial role in securing and managing competitive funding from national and international sources, ensuring the continuity and impact of our projects. Your proven success in obtaining grants will be crucial in expanding our research capacity and maintaining robust support for cutting-edge work. As a leader, you will mentor students and early career researchers, facilitating knowledge exchange and developing the technical skills necessary for their success. You will also contribute to teaching activities and foster an environment that values collaboration, creativity and professional growth. In addition, you will advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion within the research community, empowering future researchers and inspiring a culture of innovation and curiosity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding.  The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • A strong interdisciplinary background combining both experimental and computational bioinformatics approaches in both basic and translational research.
  • Leadership and international collaborations with a solid experience in international research collaboration in multidisciplinary biomedical research.
  • Independently conducted research projects, with a focus on integrating experimental and computational methods to understand complex diseases. This includes completed research projects resulting in high quality peer-reviewed publications as lead author.
  • Ability to secure competitive research grants as principal applicant. This indicates the ability to support high-impact, cutting-edge research initiatives and sustain independent research programs.
  • Interdisciplinary expertise: in bioinformatics, molecular biochemistry and preclinical animal studies.
  • Track record in the application of computational biology and animal experiments to answer complex biomedical questions, including but not limited to the development of neural network learning pipelines for single-cell and spatial transcriptome analyses and further integration of multi-omics analyses, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in reputable and impactful journals.
  • A portfolio of impactful contributions to translational research. This includes expertise in conducting biochemical experiments such as protein domain studies and mass spectrometry, and experience in developing genetically modified mouse models.
  • Skills in preparing single-cell sequencing libraries, integrating single-cell RNA sequencing data across species to identify evolutionarily conserved gene regulatory networks, and proficiency in performing generation and analysis of spatial transcriptomics and single-cell multiomics data, with experience in developing customized pipelines for comprehensive data interpretation.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Track record in teaching, supervision and mentoring: Experience in teaching bioinformatics or related courses at university level.
  • Experience in mentoring students in related fields.
  • Ability to foster an environment that values collaboration, creativity and professional development.
  • Teaching qualifications relevant to teaching at university level.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
