The activities at the Department of Learning, Informatics, Management and Ethics (LIME) include education and research about healthcare leadership, management, lifelong learning for health care professionals, ethics and policy issues related to health care and research, health care information systems, social innovation and suicide prevention. You will be part of the research group Leadership in Healthcare and Academia and work with research, teaching and collaboration with the surrounding society. Our research group studies different aspects of leadership and organization in healthcare and academia. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with practice, and we also conduct teaching in leadership at undergraduate and graduate level, as well as developing and providing programs aimed at professionals in healthcare and academia. We now want to further strengthen our expertise in the area of leadership and organization, specifically in the research that concerns the relationship between organizational and health professionals, i.e. between those who organise the care and those who carry out the care.

Your mission 

As an Assistant professor, you will lead ongoing research projects concerning tensions between organizational and health professionals in public healthcare organizations, as well as conduct empirical and theoretical studies with focus on various forms of leadership (i.e. collective leadership). You are expected to actively seek new external research funding in these areas. You are also expected to have the competence and experience required to be able to participate in and actively contribute to the development of different types of leadership courses at Karolinska Institutet (e.g. in the nursing programme, the medical programme, and the supplementary education for nurses with a foreign degree). You are also expected to have the subject expertise and experience required to be able to work independently on Karolinska Institute’s training programmes for managers in academia and healthcare.

Your tasks will include:

  • Lead and carry out qualified qualitative analyses based on the collection of data in Swedish and summaries of knowledge
  • Work with theory development in the research field
  • Supervision of master students, doctoral students and postdocs
  • Teaching in leadership and organization in Swedish and English at undergraduate and graduate level and for managers at different levels in healthcare and academia
  • Independently apply for external research funding in the role of PI or co-applicant
  • Independently run research projects and article collaborations as first or last author 

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements 

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor. 

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist.  

Special grounds refer to: 

  • parental leave, 
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations 
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces 
  • long-term illness 

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation. 

Appointment to the position of assistant professor requires good scientific skills and good pedagogical skills. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet dnr. 1-721/2024). 

You meet the following requirements

  • Licensed psychologist with broad clinical experience in primary care, psychiatry and occupational health care and a doctoral degree or equivalent competence achieved no more than five years before the application deadline, in the field of management and/or organization
  • As the main applicant, applied for and received research funding in competition in the areas covered by the call
  • At least 5 weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education and experience of teaching leadership, group processes and improvement work for nurses and managers, among others
  • Experience as supervisor
  • Good knowledge and experience in collecting and analyzing qualitative data
  • Excellent written and oral skills both in Swedish and English
  • Has published scientific articles in public organization and health care research and has a future planning of studies about the organization of health care and leadership, specifically with a focus on the relationship between different professional groups 

Bases of assessment 

In the assessment of the applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on previous merits in the field in question, teaching and research expertise, as well as personal suitability and ability to work independently and in groups.

It is particularly meritorious that you have 

  • Conducted research on relationships between different types of professionals in the health care organization, preferably between the roles that organize and develop care and those who conduct care-related work
  • Has ongoing international and national research collaborations
  • Published scientific articles with an empirical and theoretical focus in journals that are judged to have high quality in the field based on impact factor (IF) or the Norwegian list (level 1 or 2)
  • Supervised doctoral students or degree projects
  • Assessed the research of others
  • Experience of different forms of teaching

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer.  Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
