Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical andepidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Description of the subject area

In EL Andaloussi's lab, the focus is on developing technologies for the efficient intracellular delivery of functional oligonucleotide therapeutics, proteins, or protein complexes using engineered extracellular vesicles (EVs). Despite the success of extracellular targets of therapeutic proteins or the approval of more than 20 oligonucleotide therapies for clinical applications, endosomal sequestration and poor release into the cytosol remain common challenges for macromolecules-based therapies.

We have developed oligonucleotide conjugates, protein complexes and delivery technologies involving engineered EVs that enhanced the delivery, improved endosomal release and add targeting capacities. We have disease-relevant cellular and animal models, and we are looking for an experienced in vivo biologist motivated by the idea of performing in vivo testing of these new therapeutic approaches. We offer a research platform with a unique opportunity for discovering, manufacturing and delivering advanced therapeutics.

Your mission

As a Research Specialist, you will work on central nervous system (CNS) in vivo delivery of multimodal therapeutics, including conjugated oligonucleotide, protein complexes and gene editors. The research will mainly focus on developing and testing tissue-specific therapeutic approaches. You will assess the efficiency of macromolecular delivery using sequencing and fluorescence-based technologies, in vivo imaging, flow cytometry and microscopy. The right candidate for this position is a skilled in vivo researcher, knowledgeable in mice CNS therapy administration alternatives and experienced in bolus injection and intraventricular osmotic pumps implantation.

Projects will be highly innovative and require current knowledge in the field and an excellent ability to integrate and transfer advanced technologies to develop cutting-edge new technical approaches. In your role as a Research Specialist, you will work hands-on in the laboratory, participate in the conception and design of new projects, and take on leadership responsibilities.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise and documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation. For this role, we want you to have academic training in in vivo experimentation, medical morphology and physiology.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • It is particularly desirable that the applicant has great interpersonal skills, leadership qualities and a positive attitude
  • Extensive experience in in vivo experimentation and phenotypic analysis of pre-clinical models
  • Conception and execution of innovative strategies in macromolecular delivery
  • The applicant is expected to have a thorough understanding of CNS morphology and physiology

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Exceptional skills in cell culture techniques and flow cytometry

  • Excellent molecular and cell biology expertise, especially using small molecules and genome editing techniques

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI. In this recruitment, we place great importance in personal characteristics.
