Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neuroscience

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

We are looking for an experienced scientist for a position as head of the Unit for experimental traumatology, which conducts research and research education in defense medicine. The unit has close collaborations with the Swedish defense and associated organizations.

Description of the subject area

The unit for experimental traumatology at the Department of Neuroscience conducts research in experimental traumatology within a context of defense medicine. The research aims to improve survival through improved healthcare in primary and secondary care. The unit conducts research in two focus areas: prehospital care and protection, and neurotraumatology. This includes reduction of deaths due to massive bleeding and lost airway, strategies to reduce death due to traumatic brain injury, and injury mechanisms related to body armor and helmet. The unit is located in Biomedicum and Astrid Fagraeus laboratory in Solna.

Your mission

The position as senior lecturer in experimental traumatology is oriented towards defense related medicine and you are expected to have overall responsibility for the research within the Unit for experimental traumatology. This means that you will independently lead research projects related to military and ballistic trauma. You need to master the technologies used by the unit to simulate damage, and use and develop physiological, morphological, cell and molecular biological analysis techniques. You will conduct training and supervision of students at all levels, including doctoral students and postdocs within the unit. You will be head of the experimental large animal and small animal research facilities. You will also be responsible for research on biological effects of radar and pulsed microwaves, which implies knowledge in this field. Moreover, you will be responsible for handling explosives. Overall, you are expected to have deep knowledge in trauma physiology and primary care in a prehospital environment. The projects are developed together with our funders, which limits the possibilities to conduct independent research.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated very good pedagogical skills and excellent scientific expertise. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet)

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, or have gained equivalent competence, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

You should have documented research experience in experimental traumatology and conduct ongoing research in this area.

As parts of the operations involve interactions with The Swedish Armed Forces and other Swedish authorities it is mandatory that you are a Swedish citizen. You also need to be able to communicate well in English and Swedish (corresponding to C1-level according to GERS).

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (2), and leadership and collaboration skills (2).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • A medical degree and a board certificate in anesthesia and intensive care medicine.
  • Formal education and experience of planning and conduction of animal experiments (corresponding to FELASA C).
  • Formal education and practical training in handling of explosives.
  • Experience and knowledge in both preclinical experimental science and clinical research methodologies.
  • Extensive theoretical and practical knowledge in physiological, morphological, cell and molecular biological analysis techniques, as well as extensive experience in using animal model systems.
  • Extensive knowledge in physiology, anesthesiology and monitoring related to preclinical experimentation, as well as good knowledge in statistics and planning of research.
  • Experience in basic science on military and ballistic trauma, in preclinical model systems and cell culture models, as well as research on biological effects of radar and pulsed microwaves.

It is meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Research experience in related defense medicine areas such as environmental physiology, diving medicine, and have undergone military training in diving.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
