Join Our Dynamic Research Team at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm

The Jakobsson lab at Karolinska Institutet delves into blood vessel morphogenesis, patterning, and function in developmental and disease contexts, aiming to pioneer new therapeutic approaches. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies like inducible genetic manipulations, lineage tracing, and state-of-the-art confocal live imaging, we work with mouse models, bridging fundamental understanding with practical applications. Our environment offers access to diverse tools such as drug screening platforms, proteomics, single-cell RNA sequencing, and spatial transcriptomics. Integrated into a high-performing scientific setting with close clinical ties, our lab fosters innovation and impactful discoveries. Explore some of our publications: Jin et al, Nat. Description of the subject area

Our current project focuses on unraveling cell signaling dynamics at the intersection of flow-shear and ligand-induced responses, crucial in understanding vascular malformation associated with inherited human vascular diseases. Utilizing mouse models alongside advanced technologies including single-cell RNA sequencing, we aim to decode intricate cellular mechanisms. For an overview, visit our lab website: (

Your mission

You will join Dr. Lars Jakobsson’s group within the Division of Vascular Biology at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, composing an outstanding research environment. The group is located in the lively Biomedicum research center in central Stockholm, providing an exceptional environment for research and education.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

We seek a highly motivated, creative, and scientifically curious team player with a keen eye for biological intricacies. The candidate should have proven experience in managing projects independently, towards publication. More than 15 publications in well-established journals with at least one as corresponding author, is a requirement. He/she should hold a doctorate in molecular/developmental biology directed towards vascular biology. Proven experience in application of genetic mouse models of vascular malformation as well as live imaging of explant cultures in 3D, are strong merits. Mastering confocal microscopy (Leica SP8), image analysis, mouse colony management, in vivo mouse experimentation, analysis of brain and retinal vasculatures, cell isolation for single cell analysis, tissue culture, analysis of cell signaling, cloning using viral vectors, and routine bioinformatics, would be advantageous. Strong communication skills and proficiency in English, both spoken and written, are essential.

Assessment criteria

Interested candidates should submit the following documents in English:

  • Curriculum vitae, including thesis title and date of defense.
  • Complete list of publications, including submitted work.
  • Letter of motivation (explaining research interests and expertise, maximum one page).
  • List of three referees.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
