The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven departments within which both research and teaching are conducted. The department is involved in advanced research in both basic and applied research. All departments work in close contact with clinics at Karolinska University Hospital. The department's educational activities contribute to most programs and courses within KI's total educational offerings.

At the Division of Clinical Immunology, we study the functions of the immune system in relation to infections and cancer. The research is translational in nature and includes everything from basic research, to experimental models in mice and zebrafish, patient samples to clinically oriented research where, for example, registers are used to answer the scientific question. The department thus constitutes a dynamic environment where experimental research meets clinical questions.

We are now looking to hire an assistant professor for a fixed-term position for 4 years.

Your mission

The role as assistant lecturer includes teaching in various parts of basic and clinical immunology. Your duties also include conducting your own research, supervising students and presenting your results at internal and external meetings in Sweden and abroad. Furthermore, you are expected to seek and obtain your own research funding from various financiers within and outside of Sweden with the goal of building up your own research group over time.

This employment as an assistant lecturer is a time-limited employment of 4 years with the right to be tested for a promotion to lecturer. The position focuses on research.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

We are looking for a researcher with a focus on mucosal immunity in relation to inflammation and infection. You master basic methodology in cell and molecular biology. You should have experience with inflammatory experimental models in mouse and zebrafish. You should also have experience in developing methods for analyzing large-scale methods in gene sequencing and it is meritorious if you have used new methodology in single-cell and spatial transcriptomics. It is also meritorious if you speak and write in Swedish. 
As a person, you are thorough, responsible and work well in a team.

The following are requirements for the position:

  • Demonstrated experience working with zebrafish as a model system
  • Demonstrated experience working with mouse as a modeling system
  • Demonstrated experience working with 3D cell culture systems (organoids)

The following are meritorious for the position:

  • Knowledge of analyzing data from large-scale gene sequencing methods, such as RNAseq or equivalent
  • Experience of working with and analyzing data from spatial transcriptomics

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
