The Varrone research group conducts studies that support the development of new treatments and also develops new biomarkers for neuropsychiatric disorders. Clinical research and education are carried out in collaboration with Region Stockholm, other research groups from Karolinska Institutet, other universities, and industrial partners worldwide. 

Your mission

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a non-invasive molecular imaging technique increasingly used in biomedical research, medical diagnostics, and drug development. PET research opens up opportunities to explore entirely new aspects of human physiology and various disease states. It can optimize treatments using both new and established medications.

As a senior research specialist, you will work closely with the research group leader Varrone, as well as unit managers within the Division of Imaging Core Facilities. You will play an important role in the development of new trace elements in academic projects and projects carried out by the research groups in collaboration with industrial partners.

Your responsibilities will include: 

• Labeling new molecules primarily with isotopes like 18F or 11C
• Optimizing labeling methods
• Collaborating with radiochemists working in the Radiochemistry Core Facility
• Engaging with industrial partners on projects related to the development of new tracers
• Providing guidance to doctoral students and teaching master’s or doctoral-level courses

The position also involves other tasks within the projects.

Eligibility requirements

We are seeking a skilled, motivated, and PhD-qualified radiochemist with extensive experience in the above tasks. To be considered for the position, you need to meet the following requirements:

• PhD in PET radiochemistry
• Many years of experience in advanced radiochemistry, particularly in developing your own method for PET radioligand development using short-lived isotopes such as carbon-11 or fluorine-18
• Experience with research collaboration in radiochemistry at national or international levels
• Experience with collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry
• Experience in radioligand development for CNS applications
• Experience with supervision of doctoral students and teaching 

As the workgroup and collaborators come from different parts of the world, proficiency in spoken and written English is essential. 

To be eligible for employment as a Senior Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good level of research expertise with significant scientific production. The applicant must also have demonstrated a good scientific independence to which their own contribution has been significant and a research plan of high quality with clear potential for the future.
