The division of oral rehabilitation provides undergraduate training in clinical oral physiology, postgraduate training in clinical oral physiology as well as master and doctoral education. The divisions research in the field of clinical oral physiology is of translational character where mechanism behind long term orofacial pain and gender differences is studied as well as the short- and long-termed effects of different treatments and differences in treatment outcome between children and adults.

Description of the subject area

Clinical oral physiology is the odontology specialty that addresses the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with long-term orofacial pain and temporomandibular joint dysfunction, which affects a significant part of the population with an increase in both prevalence and incidence over the last decade. The temporomandibular joint dysfunction includes difficulties in mouth opening, mastication, disturbing joint noises, and locking or catching of the joint. Long-term orofacial pain is often associated with reduced quality of life due to negative effect on working or socially related activities such as talking, laughing, and eating.

Your mission

We are looking for a person who is passionate for developing education and research on high international level within the clinical oral physiology field. Of particular importance is to develop the collaboration between the Department of Dental Medicine and Region Stockholm, other universities, and other actors of the surrounding society. An important task is to continue the work with strong links between research and education. You are expected to take an active role in educational activities by leading and developing both theoretical and clinical undergraduate education and planning of teaching activities as well as development of courses and study programmes offered at master, and doctoral levels of education. Your position as Professor also includes supervision of doctoral and postdoctoral students and to develop the research activities of the discipline.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on education and research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise; good scientific expertise, and clinical expertise.

You shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.

The position will also be combined with a position as a specialist trained dentist in clinical oral physiology (specialty) at the University Dental Clinic, Karolinska Institutet and therefore the candidate must have a DDS with specialist competence in clinical oral physiology, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing dentistry in Sweden.

Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

You should also have

  • documented pedagogic skills and experience of teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and postgraduate level
  • experience of leading a research group

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (2), pedagogical expertise (3), leadership, development, and collaboration expertise (1), and clinical expertise (2).

  • Documented experience of development of education in the field of clinical oral physiology.
  • Examples of own research results implemented in clinical routines improving the patient care
  • Knowledge of modern principals and terminology within university pedagogics
  • A reflective approach to teaching
  • Experience as responsible organizer of courses including development of teaching activities and learning goals on undergraduate, advanced, and postgraduate level. Experience of international collaboration on educational issues
  • Examples of own pedagogy research results implemented in education

It is meritorious that you have shown

  • Experience of leadership in international and national dental networks
  • Experience of academic as well as clinical leadership through confirmed previous and ongoing leadership assignments as well as formal leadership training
