The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions in which both research and teaching are conducted. The department is involved in advanced research in both basic and applied research. All divisions operate in close contact with clinics at Karolinska University Hospital. The Division of Pathology integrates disciplines such as anatomy, histology, physiology, immunology, and cell and molecular biology to understand the causes and mechanisms of the onset and development of disease states.

The Division of Pathology is currently recruiting an assistant professor in tumor cell plasticity for an employment of 6 years. The successful candidate will work in Huddinge and focus on research and education at the division.

Your mission

The purpose of the position of Associate Professor is to develop an own line of research as an independent researcher and to acquire the scientific and pedagogical merits required for eligibility for subsequent appointment as Associate Professor.

The role involves performing high quality research in the field of tumor biology and ribosome biogenesis. The tasks include performing in vitro and in vivo studies of breast cancer, with a focus on cellular plasticity, metastasis and angiogenesis. You will help to identify new mechanisms responsible for tumor metastasis and to find new anti-cancer therapies. In addition, you are expected to obtain external independent research funding, supervise students and contribute to teaching in courses organized by the Department of Laboratory Medicine.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

The applicant should have a doctoral degree in medical science and experience in postdoctoral training in translational cancer research, vascular pathologies and expertise in the field of ribosome biogenesis and translational control. The candidate should also have experience in supervising students (bachelor/master/doctoral level) and have previously obtained own research funding. Additional requirements for this position include appropriate training to perform animal studies (FELASA C certificate), broad experience working with different mouse breast cancer models and performing immunohistochemical, molecular and cellular analyses of tissues with a focus on the tumor microenvironment. Proven oral and written skills in English and Swedish are a must. Given the strong international focus and collaborative nature of the group, the applicant must also be a team player and demonstrate good time management and leadership skills.

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
  • specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months).

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Bases of assessment

Particular emphasis will be placed on pedagogical and scientific skills when assessing applicants. Teaching skills should be proven by previous experience in supervising students at different levels of education (Bachelor/Master/PhD) and having completed appropriate teaching courses. Scientific excellence should be demonstrated by publications in internationally leading journals, with a focus on tumor and vascular biology, and by having obtained independent research funding.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
