The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Physiotherapy conducts high-quality education at basic and advanced levels, research education and research within physiotherapy. Education is offered at entry-level bachelor (Study Programme in Physiotherapy), advanced level (one-year Master) and doctoral education. The division also provides several supplementary courses and contracted courses targeting professionals or others. Approximately 50 teachers/researchers and administrators are employed at the division, and 20 doctoral students.

The position is situated in the Franzén research group at the division of physiotherapy, NVS, KI. The focus of the research groups is on translational research from exploring neural mechanisms to clinical interventions/implementation in the field of neurological and geriatric rehabilitation. Our areas of special interest are balance control, exercise, physical activity and falls in elderly and individuals with neurological diseases (Parkinson’s disease, Multiple sclerosis, stroke and spinal cord injury).

The postdoc will be working in Franzen’s group, consisting of research assistants, doctoral students, postdocs as well as junior and senior researchers. The multidisciplinary project group consists of researchers with extensive expertise in different fields and from several research groups (neuroimaging, neurology, psychology etc). The doctoral student will have their workspace both at the uMOVE core facility in Solna and also at the division of physiotherapy, NVS in Flemingsberg.

Your mission

We are now searching for a postdoctoral fellow who will in several stages develop and test feasibility of a new exercise treatment for people with Parkinson's disease that is more adapted to different subtypes and each individual's abilities. The postdoc will also initiate a randomized controlled study of the exercise intervention when it is ready for a full-scale study. The position is full-time, 2 years with the possibility of extension and the position starts on June 1, 2023.

Your work will consist of usual duties at postdoctoral level such as project design, data collection, processing, data analysis and statistical analysis. Both qualitative and quantitative research designs will be used. Writing scientific articles, grant applications and being able to present the research are important tasks. There is also the opportunity to design your own studies in the area. This project is a large collaborative project, which means that an important ability is to be able to collaborate and interact with different parties as well as to also lead and coordinate parts of the project. Teaching and supervision of students and doctoral students may occur.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

Applicants should, in addition to the above qualifications, have good experience of patient contact with people with neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, applicants should have a basic education in physiotherapy and experience in movement analysis. There is of great importance if you have experience and knowledge of training interventions, feasibility studies and iterative development processes. It is advantageous if you have experience in both qualitative and quantitative research designs.

You should be initiative-taking, independent and structured. We attach great importance to cooperation, flexibility and personal suitability. You should be very good at communicating orally and in writing in English.
