Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

At our research group, under the lead of Associate Professor Rula Zain, we are at the forefront of groundbreaking research on genetic disorders. We seek a passionate and driven Research Student to join our dynamic team. We aim to advance our understanding of trinucleotide repeat disorders and develop innovative therapeutic solutions.

Division

The Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine is one of the divisions at the Department of Laboratory Medicine. BCM provides the facilities needed for cell - molecular biology research and the possibility to perform research in vivo. With its particular position in the interface between basic science and clinical application, BCM has a unique opportunity to translate progress in biomedical research into new methods and principles for diagnosing and treating diseases.

Your mission

In this role, you will be pivotal in our research efforts, particularly in the data generation and analysis of lead compounds designed to target somatic instability Huntington’s disease models. You will apply advanced PCR amplification techniques, which will be followed by bioinformatic analysis.

Your critical tasks will include developing data processing scripts based on pre-established methodology. Through these scripts, you will conduct thorough statistical analysis to discern statistical variances between control and treated groups.

You will also be hands-on with various lab techniques, including sample preparation, DNA purification and capillary electrophoresis for DNA fragment length analysis (FLA). Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to learn and assist in developing delivery assays of therapeutic oligonucleotides.

As part of our research efforts, you will contribute significantly to developing computational tools and analytical methodologies. Your role will involve presenting your findings to peers, supervisors and mentors in weekly group meetings.

Your profile

We are looking for a candidate who possesses a strong passion for molecular biology, genetic disorders and the pursuit of scientific knowledge. Proficiency in data processing, statistical analysis, and programming are essential skills for this role. While prior experience in trinucleotide repeat disorders or in-vivo experiments is not mandatory, it would be valuable.

Your willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques, including DNA isolation from different tissues, PCR with multiple fluorophores and Capillary Electrophoresis, will be highly regarded. Practical communication skills are crucial; you will be part of a well-functioning team with whom you will share your findings and insights.

The applicant should have or currently pursue a degree in biology, biochemistry, genetics, or a related field, you should also be able to work within a collaborative team environment while demonstrating the capability to work independently when necessary.

Benefits:

As a Research Intern in our group, you will enjoy various benefits contributing to your personal and professional growth. You'll gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge molecular biology therapeutic applications and thrive in a collaborative and innovative research atmosphere. Working alongside experienced researchers and mentors, you will develop skills in data analysis, experimental techniques and scientific communication.
