The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.

The research group

The research groups within the psychology sector at ARC uses longitudinal data from large population-based databases and smaller data collections with the aim to study changes in cognitive abilities and their neural basis in aging. Besides cognitive measures, we use brain imaging techniques, such as PET and MRI, to study the importance of structural and functional factors, as well as dopaminergic functions in cognitive aging.

Your mission

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

The position as assistant professor is mainly focused on research but research administration and teaching are also included in the position. You will participate in ongoing research projects in cognitive neuroscience with focus on the relationship between brain and cognition.

The tasks will include:

  • Planning, analyzing, and reporting research projects within cognitive neuroscience
  • Initiate and develop new projects and apply for research grants within this field
  • Research administration related to the databases to be included in the research
  • Teaching and supervision of students at undergraduate and graduate levels within the fields cognitive aging and cognitive neuroscience

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist.

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
  • specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months).

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Bases of assessment

The successful candidate is expected to have:

  • a PhD in neuroscience or equivalent scientific competence
  • knowledge in the area of neuroimaging and cognitive aging
  • knowledge and experience in statistical analyses of longitudinal databases
  • knowledge and experience in analyzing multimodal brain imaging data
  • publications in the field in international journals
  • documented scientific knowledge and quality in earlier work relevant for the application
  • good teaching abilities
  • excellent English skills in reading and writing

We are looking for a candidate with good analytical abilities who is quick to understand new ideas and methods and with high ability to take on responsibilities and fulfill assignments. You are used to working both independently and as a member of a team. Excellent cooperation skills are needed for this position. Special attention will be given to personal qualities.

Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
