The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and comprises advanced basic scientific, clinical, and epidemiological research. In addition, it is one of the main educational departments at Karolinska Institutet. A research assistant position is now available at the Division of Clinical Physiology.
The project concerns the exercise intolerance/symptom worsening in patients with the post-COVID syndrome ("long covid") and aims to improve the physiological understanding of these symptoms and elucidate underlying mechanisms. The project will involve a comprehensive series of physiological and molecular assessments at baseline and after acute exercise. The candidate is expected to carry out this research project under the supervision of Division Head Thomas Gustafsson and Drs. Tommy Lundberg and Helene Rundqvist at the Division of Clinical Physiology.
Qualified for employment as a research assistant is an individual who has earned a master of science in Exercise Physiology or has equivalent scholarly competence. Candidates who have not completed a master of science by the application deadline may also apply, provided all requirements for a completed degree are fulfilled. The candidate should have a strong understanding of clinical exercise physiology and experience working with patients/human subjects. Experience with clinical trials, experimental studies and human physiological assessments (especially VO2max, dynamic muscle strength with BioDex and muscle ultra sound) is required. Experience with data base handling as well as knowledge and experience in blood and muscle tissue collection is required. A keen interest in science and the ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team as well as a good ability to communicate in English and Swedish is required. Emphasis will be placed on personal skills, knowledge, and abilities, as well as on documented previous experience.
A creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is also a state university, which entitles you to several good benefits through our collective agreement. And you get to practice freely in our modern wellness facilities, where trained staff are on site.
Location and Research Group:
The position is available at the Division of Clinical Physiology, Department of Laboratory Medicine in Huddinge (KI South Campus, Flemingsberg). Our research aims to raise awareness of the relationship between physical activity and health, and of the causes of impaired body functions such as muscle wasting in disease or aging. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with the Unit of Clinical Physiology at the Karolinska University Hospital. Traditional metabolic and physiological measurements are combined with molecular analyses (gene and protein expression by single and global techniques and integrated bioinformatics) in various tissues as well as in primary cell cultures.
