Description of the subject area

Palliative medicine involves a multiprofessional and multidisciplinary approach, with the aim of alleviating suffering and creating an optimal quality of life in people with diseases that are expected to lead to death in the foreseeable future. In the early palliative phase, palliative care is integrated with life-prolonging therapy, for example in the case of cancer, severe heart failure or Parkinson's disease. Alleviation of complex symptoms, as well as psychological, social and existential support for patients and their families is the focus. The field of geriatrics also includes research in the subject of palliative medicine, something that needs to be developed further, as there is a great need for palliative care within the elderly group both for cancer and non-cancer diagnoses, regardless of the form of care.
