The Department of Medicine Huddinge (MedH), Karolinska Institutet (KI), is one of the fastest growing clinical departments at KI. The department conducts translational research in the internal medicine subspecialties including cardiology. MedH is made up of seven divisions with a total of about 60 research groups. The activities consist of research, postgraduate education and undergraduate education for future doctors, nurses and other professional training relevant to the profession.

The clinical activities at Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge are at the absolute forefront, but strengthened research is needed to also be able to link it with improved diagnostics and treatment in larger patient groups, where emphasis is also placed on clinical implementation and spreading knowledge to society at large.

 

Description of the subject area
Cardiology is a well-established and comprehensive activity at KI and Karolinska University Hospital, both clinically and research-wise. A clinical area that has expanded significantly in recent years is advanced treatment of various arrhythmias. In this area, catheter-borne ablation treatment is in strong development and Karolinska University Hospital is currently the largest center in the Nordic region and one of the largest in Europe when it comes to invasive electrophysiology, with over 1700 procedures per year. In addition to ablation activities, several other areas of arrhythmology have developed significantly, such as device therapy with pacemakers and ICD in patients with heart failure, cardiogenetic outpatient activity, telemedicine screening and follow-up, and sports cardiology.

 

Your mission

The person we are looking for is expected to lead the clinical research in the field of arrhythmology and have overall responsibility for the development of academic cardiology both within the department and the within the clinical activities in the hospital. Furthermore, it is important that both undergraduate and postgraduate education are strengthened in this field, and that Karolinska Institutet develops its international network.

The professorship will be combined with employment as a physician at the Medical Unit Cardiology, Theme Heart Vessel Neuro, Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge, and the clinical employment is expected to be 30 percent. The level of clinical position (senior consultant, assistant chief physician, specialist physician) is determined after peer review as below.

 

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise, excellent scientific expertise and clinical expertise. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

We are looking for a person who can develop treatment of various arrhythmias and in the field of pacemaker and ICD treatment of patients with heart failure for various reasons. The applicant should therefore demonstrate high scientific expertise in these areas of cardiology.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in cardiology at the Theme Heart Vessel Neuro, Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge and therefore the applicant must have a medical degree and specialist competence in cardiology and meet the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

 

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

Documented clinical experience of invasive electrophysiology is a merit, as well as a stated ambition that the scientific activity should interact with the clinical environment. Telemedicine methods and home monitoring are expected to play an increasing role in future arrhythmia care and research, which is why experience in digital health is a merit. It is of great importance that the applicant has a solid and well-documented experience of higher leadership assignments, as a crucial part of the assignment is to lead and develop the department's research department in cardiology in collaboration with the clinical activities.

In addition, applicants must have completed 10 weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions' recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If such training is lacking at the time of employment, the professor shall, within the framework of the employment, undergo such training during the first two years of employment.
