Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

A position as a Research Specialist is available in the lab of Thomas Perlmann at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Karolinska Institutet. The lab is located at Biomedicum, a research building with excellent infrastructure and world-leading research in many areas of biomedical science.

Description of the subject area

The lab focuses on understanding the development and maintenance of dopamine neurons within the ventral midbrain. We are unraveling the signaling and transcriptional regulation that govern these cells' specification, differentiation, and maintenance. The studies have relevance for regenerative medicine and neurodegeneration concerning Parkinson’s disease and other brain disorders. We are using mouse genetics and other methods, including single-cell RNA sequencing, in our studies. In collaborative projects, we also focus on regenerative strategies such as stem cell therapy and the maintenance of dopamine neurons in the human brain.

Your mission

The recruitment is intended for a Research Specialist focusing on the biocomputational analysis of developing and adult dopamine neurons and other brain cells. The work will involve the analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing data and other large-scale data sets derived from studies on dopamine neurons and Parkinson’s disease.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

The applicant is highly motivated and can collaborate and function well in a team. Skills in the following areas are a requirement: advanced expertise in computational methods for the analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing data, research knowledge and expertise in the area of neuroscience and molecular biology, expertise in FACS, and in the generation of single-cell RNA sequencing libraries, expertise in advanced histological methods including computational methods such as ImageJ.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown
• an ability to understand neuroscience projects in depth.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown
• an ability to complete single-cell RNA-sequencing projects as demonstrated by first authorships of published papers.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants concerning the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to the positive development of the activities at KI
