We are looking for a professor that is interested in leading and developing research in infectious diseases as well as leading education with a focus on infectious diseases.
The Department of Medicine, Solna, has well established educational- and research profiles in biomedicine and clinical medicine at a high international level. Infectious diseases constitutes a central part of the department’s research and education in clinical medicine. The Division of Infectious Diseases at Department of Medicine, Solna is responsible for research in infectious diseases and for the education in infectious diseases for medical students in close collaboration with the Department of Infectious Diseases (ME Infektion) at the Karolinska University Hospital.
Medical research is increasingly dependent on data-driven life science and open access to data. The complexity of handling data is growing exponentially. To meet this accelerating development, we aim to strengthen our computational and data-driven focus in clinical research and epidemiology with emphasis on infectious diseases. Moreover, clinical trials and clinical research on acute infections are important to improve the management of infections and implementation of new strategies. The research environment and the health care facilities in close geographical proximity to our department provide an outstanding opportunity to develop this field – from molecular aspects to clinical registry data and clinical trials. With a scientifically and clinically strong leader with a great interest to also lead the education for medical students in infectious diseases it would be possible to further improve this field at KI and the Karolinska University Hospital.
To ensure research and research-based education of high quality, there is a need for a professor who conducts research and education at a high international level at the Department of Medicine, Solna, combined with position as at least a specialist physician at the Department of Infectious Diseases (ME Infektion) at Karolinska University Hospital.
The mission is thus to conduct research as principal investigator with your own group at an internationally competitive level in this subject area and to lead medical education at high quality, in collaboration with other hospitals, in infectious diseases for medical students.
The professorship will be combined with a position as at least specialist physician in infectious diseases at the Karolinska University Hospital. The employment rate is divided into 70 percent at MedS and 30 percent at the Karolinska University Hospital.
To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent scientific expertise, good pedagogical expertise and clinical expertise. The applicant must be a research leader with an established research line and her/his own doctoral students as well as experience in education in infectious disease for medical students.
The position will be combined with a position as at least a specialist physician in infectious diseases at the Department of Infectious Diseases (ME Infektion), Karolinska University Hospital and therefore the candidate must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in infectious diseases as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.
Since the clinical work and teaching are expected to be performed in Swedish, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
