At the department for Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology, CLINTEC, patient- oriented education, research and postgraduate training is carried out. Through continuous improvement, collaboration and education with the patient in focus, research results must be translated into healthcare to improve people's health. We are looking for a person who wants to conduct research and to conduct research-related speech language pathology education. The unit for speech language pathology has the main responsibility for the speech language pathology program at Karolinska Institutet. At the unit for speech and language therapy, further education is also conducted at advanced level and postgraduate level, as well as research in various areas of communication difficulties and swallowing disorders.

Description of the subject area

Speech language pathology is a main area at Karolinska Institutet (KI). The area describes and explains various difficulties with communication and swallowing, as well as the consequences this can have for people's health and quality of life. Language disorders are characterized by difficulties in formulating and understanding words, sentences, and texts. Speech disorders mean that the pronunciation or speech flow does not work in a typical way. Voice disorders mean that the voice sounds hoarse, and the person may have difficulty making themselves heard. Swallowing disorders mean that you cannot chew, and swallow as expected. Speech, voice, language, and swallowing problems can occur throughout life. The problems can therefore be congenital, developmental or acquired. They can occur in isolation or form part of syndromes and diseases. Speech language pathologists are clinically active in health care, schools, and in private sectors.

At the unit for speech language pathology, internationally successful research of very high relevance is conducted to increase knowledge about and understanding of difficulties with communication and swallowing and how these functions and quality of life for affected persons can be improved. The subject of speech language pathology is interdisciplinary in nature and closely related to cognitive science, linguistics and psychology, which is why a lecturer at the unit for speech language pathology may also have their basic education in one of these or other relevant areas.
