Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and comprises advanced basic scientific, clinical, and epidemiological research. In addition, it is one of the main educational departments at Karolinska Institutet. A postdoctoral position is now available at the Division of Clinical Physiology.

The research

Currently there are over 12 million cancer survivors in Europe alone and numbers are still increasing, many cancer survivors suffer from persistent disease and treatment related side effects. We and others have shown that physical activity after a cancer diagnosis leads to maintained physical functioning and quality of life. In addition, epidemiological and animal-model based evidence support the role of exercise to enhance therapeutic efficacy, reduce recurrence and improve survival. In a recent publication, we showed that the immune system, and especially CD8+ T-cells, are instrumental for the anti-neoplastic effects of exercise.

The project

The project is part of a Horizon 2020 supported exercise intervention RCT for patients with metastatic breast cancer – PREFERABLE. Specifically, the focus of the project will be on linking exercise induced changes in immune function to disease progression and therapeutic response. To accomplish this, the applicant will have access to RCT data, state of the art human exercise facilities, animal models, and pre-clinical labs in an innovative and translational environment.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

We are looking for a candidate with experience in data analysis from clinical trials. Previous experience with human physiological assessments, murine cancer models, multi-color flow cytometry and functional characterization of immune cells is considered a merit. A keen interest in translational science and the ability to interact effectively and work productively in a interprofessional team as well as a good ability to communicate in English is required. Emphasis will be placed on personal skills, knowledge, and abilities, as well as on documented previous work.
