At the Department of Global Public Health, we conduct research, teaching and applied work based on public health science and epidemiology. Our activities have a strong international perspective, and the Department's researchers are scientific advisers to authorities and other decision-makers on the regional, national and international level. The department includes the fields of global health, public health epidemiology and social medicine including health economics, health systems research and implementation research with a total of 150 employees and around 100 PhD students.

The position will be within the health system and policy (HSP) research group, Solna, Stockholm, and the sub-group IMPlementation And QualiTy IMPAQT led by Claudia Hanson. Your will find a unique opportunity to be part of large international consortia with members in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe and strong links to leading institutions within the field in Europe and beyond.

Your mission

You will work on your own independent line of research, in global health, with a specific emphasis on the use of social science approaches and methods, qualitative and quantitative methods and intervention design, and with a strong but not limited focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To complement our research team, we welcome a significant focus on vaccine confidence research, using intervention studies in Sweden and LMICs. You will be expected to apply for research grants to support on-going research activities.

You are also expected to participate in teaching on both undergraduate level and in the Global Health and Public Health MSc programmes and deliver doctoral courses. Teaching subjects include global health, health systems and policy, social determinants of health, implementation research design, data management and support thesis project supervision.

You are also expected to contribute to the department through doctoral supervision, attending and organising seminar sessions, and joining committees or taking on supportive administrative roles. 

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
  • specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months).

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Requirements for the position

The applicant shall have a PhD in Global health, Public Health or similar as well as a good competence and experience of:

  • qualitative or quantitative studies in health system or policy and publishing in leading journals of the field, particularly as first or last author
  • receiving funding in competition
  • teaching and course leadership at bachelor or master’s level
  • good communication skills in English and Swedish in speech and writing
  • very good initiative- and cooperation skills and high degree of responsibility are required to succeed in the role
  • very good experience and proven ability to contribute, manage and lead international teams

Bases of assessment

Pedagogical and scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

The applicant will be assessed based on a combination of having knowledge of a research area and/or methods as well as pedagogical skills and teaching experience. Leadership experience in research will be an asset.

Specifically, the assessment will be based on the ability and experience of the following:

Research:

  • Communicate research in English via peer-reviewed publications and presentations (we welcome research activities in the area of vaccine confidence research)
  • Present a research profile in the area of Social Science and Global Health
  • Obtain research funding from national or international funders
  • Design, implement and analyse research projects using quantitative and qualitative methods
  • Serve as main supervisor for PhD students and master students

Teaching:

  • Serve as course leader and develop courses at undergraduate and/or graduate levels
  • Teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in global health, specifically health systems and policy, social science and global health related teaching

Leadership:

  • Plan and lead large interdisciplinary research projects in LMICs and Sweden
  • Develop research collaborations with international partners (preferably the horn of Africa)
  • Collaborate with international organizations

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
