We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated scientist with extensive experience in rodent behaviour, neuronal morphology and biochemical analysis of the brain with specific focus on ex vivo and in vitro electrophysiological techniques. Our division provides an inspiring and interactive research environment in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna.
The position will include responsibilities in projects aiming at the elucidation of synaptic function of in vitro and in vivo systems including animal models of neurodegeneration such as Alzheimer’s disease and radiation-induced neurodegeneration.
The candidate will form his/her research line and be involved in all parts of the projects ranging from planning and performing experimental work to project and data management, and dissemination of results including driving publications. You will interact closely with other members of the division and supervise doctoral students and master’s students in their projects. The position also involves teaching assignments on advanced- and doctoral education level.
The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.
Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.
Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist.

Candidates must have finished a postdoctoral period and is expected to have a background in neurobiology and neurodegeneration with good knowledge of the brain, especially by using set of electrophysiological tools to evaluate brain circuits involved in cognitive processes. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge in ex vivo induction of long-term potentiation, long-term depression, and gamma oscillations (pharmacologically induced) in hippocampal brain slices of rodents. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in specific populations of excitatory neurons and inhibitory interneuron subtypes and induction of spike timing depend-plasticity. In addition, Matlab, Python, and/or R packages knowledge for phase-coupling analysis is needed.
Candidates should demonstrate potential to obtain research funding, well documented scientific production, and interest in teaching and supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students. Candidates must be able to work independently, take own initiatives, have good collaborative skills, demonstrate good leadership qualities, be socially competent and be fluent in written and spoken English.
Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer.
