The Department of Global Public Health is an interdisciplinary department that aims to advance knowledge on how to improve population health at local, national and global level. Research at the department aims to identify the determinants of health, the distribution of health in the population, develop and evaluate individual and structural interventions, and provide evidence for guidelines and policy documents. Many of the department's researchers are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision-makers at regional, national and international level. The department has 10 research groups, about 100 research students and about 140 employees.

Description of the subject area

Public health epidemiology is about using epidemiological methods to study health problems in the general population. It includes studying how diseases and injuries are distributed between different population groups and over time, determinants of health problems and to evaluate interventions and policy measures to prevent their occurrence and consequences.

Since 2010 the department has an international master education in public health sciences with a strong profile in public health epidemiology. The programme also has a new profile in health promotion and prevention, since 2019.

Your mission

The position is focused on education and research. We are looking for an experienced and highly skilled researcher and teacher with wide competence in public health epidemiology who will be responsible for leading and developing the education and training in public health epidemiology at the department. This includes to contribute in a significant way to the development of the subject area, in research as well as in education. The work tasks also include to initiate and develop collaborations regarding public health training and education with other universities, nationally and internationally. The new professor is also expected to lead and develop own research in public health epidemiology and develop collaborations with other researchers nationally and internationally. The applicant is also expected to lead a research group and supervise PhD students and junior researchers, and to actively contribute to the department’s activities and to a strong scientific environment.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on education and research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise and good scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.

The applicant shall have broad knowledge of and experience in applying epidemiologic methods and related analytic methods in different study designs for etiologic research questions concerning public health problems and for the evaluation of different types of interventions. The applicant must also have extensive experience of teaching and supervision within public health epidemiology at master’s level and PhD level. 

The applicant must have excellent knowledge of English. The applicant shall also have formal leadership training.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (2), pedagogical expertise (3) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Excellent skills in planning, implementation, leadership and evaluation of public health epidemiology training, in terms of breadth as well as depth, and a reflective approach to teaching and learning.
  • Excellent skills in planning, implementation and leadership of research projects in public health epidemiology and communication of research to the surrounding society.
  • Experience of research on several different public health issues.
