Karolinska Institutet, Department of Clinical Neuroscience

- with focus on education and research

Join us in developing education of the highest quality

Department

The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) consists of five divisions that conduct research and education in neuroscience, from the molecular level to the societal level. The department has about 380 employees and more than 200 registered doctoral students. The work at the department is to a large extent integrated with the clinical activities at Karolinska University Hospital, St. Erik's Eye Hospital and Region Stockholm.

Division

The Division of Eye and Vision at St. Erik Eye Hospital has a major teaching commitment in areas such as ophthalmology and optometry. At the division, the Unit for optometry is responsible for the study programs in optometry (BSc in optometry and MSc in clinical optometry). The unit is also responsible for KI's optometric clinic, which is the clinic where optometry students receive their clinical training and exposure. Within the framework of the optometry programs, courses are given where physical and geometric optics, ophthalmic image analysis, visual perception and psychophysical measurements are central subjects; and it is in these subjects that the department is now looking for up to two senior lecturers who can be involved in developing the activities at the Unit of Optometry.

Description of the subject area

Within optometry, knowledge in physical and geometric optics, ophthalmic image analysis, visual perception and psychophysical measurements are central subject areas in terms of both clinical activities and research. Within the framework of these subject areas, structural and functional measurements are integrated, which are of increasing importance in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases and abnormalities.

Your mission

The position is focused on education (preclinical and clinical) and research. The successful candidate must conduct optometric research, act as course leader and supervise thesis work, as well as conduct pedagogical development on course and program level. The holder of the senior lectureship is thus expected to be a key person in developing both education and research at the Unit of Optometry, primarily in the subjects of physical and geometric optics, ophthalmic image analysis, visual perception and psychophysical measurements. The work duties will include both theoretical and clinical teaching at all levels. You will also work with the development and follow-up of research in close connection with our clinical optometric activities.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise and good scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.

Experience of course responsibility and research in the subject areas of physical and geometric optics, ophthalmic image analysis, visual perception and psychophysical measurements is a requirement. Applicants must be trained optometrists.

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (2), pedagogical expertise (3), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1), and clinical expertise (1).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.2.2 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

In assessing pedagogical expertise, the scope and quality of teaching in physical and geometric optics, ophthalmic image analysis, visual perception and psychophysical measurements will be considered.

In assessing scientific expertise, we place emphasis on research quality in physical and geometric optics, ophthalmic image analysis, visual perception and psychophysical measurements.

Since the clinical training within the optometry programs are conducted in our university clinic, clinical expertise is of importance for the employment. In assessing clinical expertise, we attach importance to experience of clinical supervision in physical and geometric optics, ophthalmic image analysis, visual perception and psychophysical measurements.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
