We are looking for a professor that shows commitment and interest in leading and developing research-based education with a focus on emergency medicine within the medical program.

Description of the subject area

The Department of Medicine, Solna (MedS), has well established educational- and research profiles in biomedicine and clinical medicine at a high international level. Emergency medicine constitutes a central part of clinical medicine and the courses in the new six-year medical program focus on how students can acquire knowledge to diagnose and manage acute and serious diseases in internal medicine. The Division of Clinical Medicine at MedS is responsible for the courses in clinical medicine, which mainly take place at the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna. To ensure research-based education of high quality, there is a need for a professor who conducts research and education at a high international level at the Department of Medicine, Solna, combined with position as specialized trained physician/consultant at the Emergency Medical unit (ME Akut) at Karolinska University Hospital.

Your mission

The person we are looking for is expected to lead and develop courses of the medical program in clinical medicine where emergency medicine is included. The mission is to assure work-based education (VFU) in emergency medicine of high quality at Karolinska University Hospital and other collaborating hospitals. It also includes conducting research as principal investigator with your own group at an internationally competitive level.

The professorship will be combined with a position as specialized trained physician/consultant in emergency medicine at Karolinska University Hospital. The employment rate is divided into 51% at MedS and 49% at Karolinska University Hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on education and research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise; good scientific expertise; and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must have experience in developing and being responsible for courses in medical programs nationally or internationally, as well as being a research leader with an established research line and her/his own doctoral students.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in emergency medicine at the Emergency Medical Unit, Karolinska University Hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in emergency medicine, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the clinical work and teaching are expected to be performed in Swedish, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (2), pedagogical expertise (3), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

  • formal responsibility for a course including work-based education in emergency medicine for medical students
  • successful research at a high international level in emergency medicine
  • leadership regarding research and development in a clinical context

  • engagement in the establishment and writing of national and international guidelines and best practice regarding emergency medicine
