The Department of Global Public Health is an interdisciplinary institution that aims to advance knowledge on how to improve population health at local, national and global level. Research at the department aims to identify the determinants of health, develop and evaluate individual and structural interventions, and provide evidence for guidelines and policy documents. Many of the department's researchers are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision-makers at regional, national and international level. The department has 9 research groups, about 85 research students and about 140 employees.

The position is placed in the PRIME health research group (Prevention, Intervention and Mechanisms in Public Health).  The group collaborates broadly with international experts in public health, with a particular focus on epidemiology. Our research themes include mental health, parental health and support, reproductive health, cardiovascular health and physical activity. The focus of this position will be research.

Your mission

As an Assistant Professor you are expected to build a new interdisciplinary research field on health impacts of extreme events under global changes with a specific focus on maternal health. Specifically, the position focuses on three overarching themes over a five-year period: improving databases for transnational studies, using these to better understand the physical and societal interplays determining the health impacts of an extreme and building policy-actionable scenarios of future extremes.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 5 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Senior lecturer (lektor) is the second highest position, after professor in the Swedish academic career structure and is equivalent to associate professor in the North American system. The purpose of the employment as Assistant Professor is to develop research as an independent researcher and acquire the scientific qualifications required for eligibility for appointment as Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor. Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
  • specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months).

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Requirements for this position:

The applicant should have medical degree or a solid background in medical sciences, including a PhD-thesis with a relevant topic. Furthermore, the applicant must have experience in interdisciplinary research relevant to the position, for example research that integrates medicine and natural sciences. An established international network of research partners working on larger health databases is also required.  

Applicants should, in recent years, have conducted research of high quality, and demonstrate the ability to continue to conduct research of high quality.

Applicants should during recent years have published in internationally leading journals in his/her field, and had a prominent place in the list of authors, preferably as first author and/or last author.

The applicant must demonstrate the potential to obtain external financing and to further build an international network within their area of research. Those eligible should show a strong potential to achieve the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer within the designated time. 

Applicants should be able to work independently but also have a strong aptitude for cooperation and teamwork. Personal qualities will be considered when appointing. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential.

Bases of assessment

Scientific expertise in epidemiology and health data science will be most important when assessing applicants. 

Pedagogical experience and leadership qualities are meritorious.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
