The research at the Department of Women's and Children's Health (KBH) deals with both basic and clinical science. The research takes place in seven divisions with separate scientific profiles. The units vary in size and have several research groups. We are also engaged in education on undergraduate (MD program), specialist (pediatric nurses, midwives, physicians), and postgraduate levels.
Groups:
Professor Angelica Lindén Hirschberg's research group within the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology is studying the basic hormonal mechanisms and genetic links between metabolism and reproduction Angelica Linden Hirschberg. Her research group has international reputation in the field of gynecological endocrinology and metabolism. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the most common endocrine disorder in women of fertile age, is associated with hyperandrogenemia, as well as insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia, and has been linked to subfertility and a broad variety of pregnancy complications. Our research in PCOS is translational from experimental in vitro studies to randomized controlled trials performed in collaboration with national and international research networks, such as the PCOS Nordic Network, and the PCOS International Guideline Development Group. We are currently investigating effects of lifestyle intervention and weight change on tissue specific metabolic markers.
The Baryawno research group is located at BioClinicum in Solna and affiliated with the Childhood Cancer Research Unit, Dept of Women’s and Children’s health, Karolinska Institutet. The group consists of 3 Ph.D. students. The focus of our research is within the microenvironment (niche) of stem cells and cancer. We are applying basic, translational and clinical approaches in our research including, single cell technologies, bioinformatics, immunology and molecular biology as well as functional analysis and development of preclinical animal- and in vitro-models. The postdoctoral candidate will be co-mentored by Dr Baryawno on the proposed project. More information on the work from the Baryawno lab can be found in recent publications (Baryawno et al., Cell 2019; Kfoury, Baryawno et al., Cancer Cell 2021; Verhoeven et al., Cell Reports Medicine 2022; Alchahin et al., Nature Communications et al., 2022, Olsen et al., JCI Insights 2022).
The postdoc project, your mission:
The current project will be focused on profiling, using single-cell RNA-sequencing, human endometrial, fat and muscle biopsy samples already obtained from PCOS patients and healthy subjects. The responsibilities of the postdoctoral fellow will be to design and perform single-cell RNA-sequencing experiments, including tissue processing and library preparations, by 10X Chromium Single Cell Solution, and further and analyze the data generated. The aim is to investigate the cellular and molecular landscape of PCOS in order to search for mechanisms of disease.
To write scientific articles and present data at international congresses.
To participate in meetings regarding general operation of the research group/division.
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
Applicants to this position should have a PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related fields. A strong background in genomics, bioinformatics and statistics as well as experience in molecular biological methods, especially single-cell RNA-sequencing and gene expression data analysis techniques is essential for the position as well as with wet lab molecular biology methods such as tissue handling and in vitro culturing. Excellent skills in programming, knowledge of biological databases and data integration as well as data visualization are advantages. A high level of organizational and communicative skills, as well as an ability to independently perform experiments and implement interpretation of data is mandatory. Excellent command of written and spoken English is required.
