Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

This position as Postdoctoral Researcher is based on a project funded by the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare (FORTE), which title is “Trajectories of care needs and care transitions after age 60: the interplay between individuals’ frailty, their environment, and personal perspectives”.

This project aims at increasing our knowledge concerning care needs and patterns of care utilization of frail and clinically complex older adults, to identify timely actions towards a more proactive and integrated healthcare. An increased rate of transition of frail individuals between healthcare (primary care, hospital) and social care providers (home care services, institutions) has been observed but not well characterized. At the same time, fragmented and idiosyncratic care transitions are arguably responsible for a quicker functional decline, which accelerates frailty development. Taking advantage of three well-characterized Swedish population-based studies part of the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care (SNAC), and of the National E-Infrastructure on Aging Research (NEAR) we will analyze data of over 7,000 individuals 60+, living in both urbanized and rural areas of three different Regions.

Your mission

A major task for the candidate will be to contribute conceptually as well as methodologically, to the research activities planned within the FORTE-funded project, under the supervision of Dr Davide Liborio Vetrano. In addition, there are possibilities to initiate individual research projects, based on the candidate´s interests. Production of reports and publications for submission to peer-reviewed journals, and other forms of dissemination will be central activities. The candidate will also be engaged in writing applications for funding. Finally, teaching at first- and second-cycle level at Karolinska Institutet will also be among the candidate’s tasks.
