Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Description of the subject area

Our research efforts in the EL Andaloussi´s lab focus on one of the greatest challenges facing modern therapeutics; delivery of macromolecules to target cells in vivo. Despite the unprecedented knowledge of diseases and their mechanisms due to advances in biomedical sciences; many promising therapeutic approaches are still clinically unavailable. This is simply because there is no efficient means of delivering these therapeutics to the right organ with the right dose. Our research performance involves developing novel and innovative drug delivery technologies that can carry proteins, RNAs or gene therapies to the target tissues safely and efficiently. In this connection, we engineer exosomes with enhanced delivery and targeting capacities and screen our wide array of exosome designs in disease-relevant cellular and animal models. Thus, our research platform offers a unique opportunity for discovering, manufacturing and delivery of advanced therapeutics.

Your mission

As a Research Specialist, you will work on the development of bioengineered extracellular vesicles (EVs) to efficiently deliver active biologics, mainly therapeutic nucleic acids, in vitro and in vivo. The major focus of the research will be on the development of innovative nucleic acid delivery strategies using engineered EVs as cargo vehicles. Your task will be to integrate our current knowledge in nucleic acid loading, EV engineering, and effective tissue-targeted drug delivery to establish modular bioengineering platforms to launch EVs as next-generation nucleic acid therapeutics. Most of the work will be conducted utilizing cell lines and animal models. The projects will be highly innovative and require up-to-date knowledge of the field and excellent ability to integrate and transfer technologies to set up new workflows. In your role as Research Specialist, you will work hands-on in the lab, be involved in the conception and design of new projects, and take on leadership responsibilities.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation. For this position, we would like you to have an academic background in medical genetics, nucleic acid biology and cellular biotechnology.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Great interpersonal skills, leadership qualities and a positive attitude
  • Extensive experience in EV production and characterization
  • Conception and execution of innovative strategies in EV engineering

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Proficiency in multi-color flow cytometry and FACS of cells and EVs
  • Superior competence in molecular biology techniques, particularly PCR-related methods

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI. In this recruitment we place great importance in personal characteristics.
