The Department of Clinical Science and Education Södersjukhuset (KI SÖS) has a long tradition of clinical research and education. KI SÖS is performing clinical treatment research and has a large doctoral study program. We are now searching for a professor to be responsible for and developing the research area in anesthesia and intensive care.

Subject area

The Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit is a very research-active clinic at Södersjukhuset, which covers the prehospital, emergency care and peri- and post-operative research. The Unit has 12 beds for intensive care and performs surgical intensive care research. The focus is on research around chains of treatment particularly in diabetes and sepsis. The Unit also has extensive research in care sciences with focus on patients experiences and rehabilitation after intensive care. Södersjukhuset has one of the largest emergency rooms in Europe which receives large cohorts of patients with common diseases. Additionally, there are possibilities for experimental research on large animals. There is basic education of both doctors and nurses. Currently, the Unit consists of one professor emeritus, one senior lecturer, two associate professors, 5 PhDs and 15 PhD students.

Your mission

The future Professor and specialist in Anesthesia and Intensive Care will be overall responsible for anesthesia and intensive care research in the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit at Södersjukhuset. One important part of the employment will be to lead sepsis research at KI SÖS.   

The Professorship will be combined with clinical duties as a specialist trained physician at the Unit at Södersjukhuset, where clinical experience and knowledge is of great importance to be able to organize the clinical research in the best possible way. The employment involves 50% clinical work and 50% research. The Professor will take part in the education of medical students and also serve as a chair of the local research, development and education of the group at the Unit.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor with focus on research, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise, excellent scientific expertise and clinical expertise. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must have experience of clinical research, clinical education within medical programs, clinical work and supervision on different levels, including PhD. 

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician at the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit, Södersjukhuset and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in anesthesia and intensive care, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. If the appointee fulfills Södersjukhuset requirements for employment as Senior Registrar or Senior Consultant, the appointee can be offered this position.

Since the clinical work includes contact with patients, good knowledge of both speaking and writing in Swedish is a requirement.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will consider qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.2 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is a strong merit if the applicant has experience of sepsis research.

It is a merit if the applicant has experience of leading national and international collaborations.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
