Description of the subject area

Within the Division of Dermatology and Venereology, the basic and clinical aspects of skin physiology and immunology as well as skin diseases are studied, with the aim to develop new treatments and educating the next generation of clinicians and researchers. We are now recruiting an academic leader with a strong research profile within the subject area, with both current and future potential, who can inspire and further develop the translational research within dermatology and venereology. The educational assignment is well established within the department and is managed within the framework of the position.

Your mission

The Division of Dermatology and Venereology is a research unit at the Department of Medicine Solna with extensive research, doctoral education and first and second-cycle education. Today, the research profile mainly consists of translational clinical and experimental research. The unit's experimental activities are mainly located at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM) in close connection with the clinical activities in dermatology and venereology. Visions for the development of epidemiological dermatology and clinical trial activities within the subject area, consistent with other divisions within the department, are welcomed, as are initiatives within current Swedish initiatives in data-driven life science.

The department has an extensive educational assignment. Thus, the division is responsible for all undergraduate education within the subject area of ​​the medical program at Karolinska Institutet. Other educational assignments include doctoral courses and clinical courses for further education. The department also has an opportunity to receive international students within the framework of educational programs.

The tasks involve conducting and developing internationally competitive research in the subject area and thus contributing to better care for patients with a dermatological disease. The appointed Professor  is expected to function as a principal investigator (PI) with her/his own research group,  publish scientific results at an international leading level and attract external funding, but also have an overall strategic responsibility for supporting and integrating experimental, epidemiological and clinical research within the Division of Dermatology and Venereology. This assignment involves collaboration with other research groups, clinical researchers and clinics. In addition to research, the appointed Professor has the overall responsibility for undergraduate and doctoral education at the division.

The position will be combined with clinical work as a specialist trained physician in dermatology and venereology at Karolinska University Hospital. Thus, an important task is to be part of the  management team in terms of research, development and education at the hospital (FoUU), as well as in strategic recruitment and other initiatives. The appointed Professor is also expected to actively interact with other healthcare units in the Region in order to develop the subject area both in terms of research and education.

Administrative tasks within Karolinska Institutet and the department, aside from those within the divison, may be included in the tasks.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as a Professor with focus on research, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise, clinical expertise and excellent scientific expertise. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must have experience of translational research in dermatology.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in dermatology and venereology at Karolinska University Hospital, and therefore the applicant must have an MD with specialist competence in dermatology, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, in addition to English, possess knowledge and skills in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(GERS).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (1), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (1).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

  • Documented ability of a strong and constructive leadership and supervision

  • Experience of teaching at an undergraduate and doctoral studies level 

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
