Description of the subject area

The medical unit of pediatric surgery is a highly specialized center of pediatric surgery, currently one of two national centers for anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung’s disease, vaginal atresia, bladder exstrophy, diaphragmatic hernia, and esophageal atresia.

Your mission

The appointee of this position as Senior Lecturer is expected to conduct internationally competitive research in pediatric surgery with applications in pediatric oncology, employing experimental tumor modulating models as well as clinical applications of these. There is a great unmet need of new models of, for example, neuroblastoma treatment, requiring a combination of basic tumor biology research and clinical implementation. 

The position includes teaching of medical students, residents and specialist trained physicians, both basic and advanced level education, as well as supervision of doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. 

The position is located at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, Karolinska Institutet, 50 percent of full time, and at Karolinska University Hospital, Solna, 50 percent of full time.

The applicant is expected to:
•    conduct strategic leadership in pediatric surgery research
•    actively participate in the development of the Division of Pediatric Oncology and Surgery, the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, as well as Karolinska Institutet
•    facilitate innovative and mutual collaborations between pediatric surgery and pediatric oncology on local, national, and international levels

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise; excellent scientific expertise and clinical expertise.

The appointee is expected to conduct internationally competitive research in the field, as judged by the number and quality of publications in international, peer-reviewed journals the past 7 years. The appointee must conduct research in the field as principal investigator and have received research grants as main and co-applicant the past 5 years, and have served as main supervisor for doctoral students.

Applicants must have qualifications and current experience as a teacher at basic/advanced level.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in pediatric surgery at the Karolinska University Hospital and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in pediatric surgery, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the position includes clinical work, the successful applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (3).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.2.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • experience as principal investigator of clinical trials
  • experience from oncological surgery
  • experience from cross-disciplinary collaborations

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • experience from experimental and translational research

Since the position is aimed at both developing the research area and future leadership, personal qualities like ability to cooperate and international networks are important.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
