The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions in which both research and teaching are carried out. The department is involved in advanced research in both basic and applied research. All departments operate in close contact with clinicians at Karolinska University Hospital.

We are currently looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join Katarina Le Blanc's research group in the Department of Clinical Immunology and Transfusion Medicine. The research group collaborates with Associate Professor Ellen Lacobaeus, Department of Neuroscience and Hong Qian, Department of Medicine. The focus of the research group is to explore the anti-inflammatory properties of mesenchymal cells and their therapeutic potential. The position is fixed-term for 2 years.

The project

Twenty years have passed since our group demonstrated feasibility and effectiveness of MSC adoptive transfer to treat immune-mediated disorders. However, the function of MSC in vivo has long been elusive. Resent research suggests that MSCs are sensors of damage signals, residing in a perivascular location with protrusions into tissue. At steady state, MSCs provide direct trophic support to tissues. MSCs are prominent within the central nervous system where they reside alongside the blood vessels and likely play an important role in both neuro-inflammation and degenerative diseases. The project will focus on obtaining a deeper understanding of this.

Your mission

As a postdoktoral researcher you will further decipher the contribution of perivascular mesenchymal stem and progenitor cells in neuroinflammation in two unique transgenic mouse models. The project will include both in vivo work and histological tissue analysis. You will also perform multi-parameter flow cytometry, ELISA and in vitro cell culture. It is expected that you will eventually supervise students and other researchers, as well as contribute to common lab duties.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

To be eligible for this position, you should have (or be expected to have within six months) a PhD in (preferably) neuroscience, regenerative or inflammatory research. Skills of using in vivo models (FELASA B or equivalent) is a requirement. You should have extensive experience in tissue preservation and histology and preferably have a basic understanding of flow cytometry and general training in cell culture. We offer a multidisciplinary team environment which is stimulating but also requires excellent communication skills and fluency in English is a requirement. Knowledge of the isolation of immune cells from tissues is an advantage, as is experience of basic immunological tests such as intracellular cytokine staining, ELISA etc. As a person, we would like you to be self-motivated, have good communication skills and a proven ability to interact effectively and work productively in a multidisciplinary team.
