The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institute. At IMM we conduct advanced research and education in environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology and biostatistics with a focus on clarifying how environmental and lifestyle factors affect human health. The postdoc position will be hosted at the Unit of Biochemical Toxicology at IMM. The research at the unit aims at understanding the connection between exposure to chemicals and complex negative health effects, such as cancer and effects caused by endocrine disruption. One of our areas of focus is developing risk assessment methodology, especially to promote systematic use of data from New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in health risk assessment of chemicals.
This project is focused on development of a mechanism-based approach for identifying and assessing the toxicity of endocrine disrupting chemicals that is applicable in the regulatory setting. The project is centered around applying Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) methodology to organize, integrate and interpret different types of toxicity data (in silico, in vitro, in vivo and human) and draw conclusions about endocrine disrupting properties of chemicals. The project builds on several on-going projects and will make use of phenotypic and molecular effect data, such as histopathological and -omics data, generated in these projects. A significant part of the project will also be to identify and integrate existing toxicity data from the scientific literature and databases. Focus is on inclusion of data from NAMs in human health risk assessment.
The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to contribute to designing case studies, and to collecting, organizing, analyzing and summarizing data, as well as to contribute to writing of scientific articles. You will also contribute to the development and evaluation of relevant AOPs and AOP networks. A specific area of responsibility will entail analyzing and interpreting existing data from in vitro studies, including genomics, proteomics and metabolomics data. The position does not entail any practical laboratory work. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with a PhD student involved in the project. The position is for two years.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
We are looking for an ambitious, highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a documented background in toxicology related to endocrine disruption and experience with analyzing and interpreting data from in vitro systems. Experience with practical experimental work in vitro with documented skills in data analysis is required. A solid understanding of endocrine disruption is also required. Basic understanding of health risk assessment of chemicals and AOP methodology are highly meritorious. Basic understanding of weight of evidence assessment is also desired.
The candidate should be able to work well within a team, have good cooperation and communication skills and should communicate well in English, both orally and in writing.
