- with focus on research
The Department of Neuroscience has the mission to conduct ground-breaking research on the nervous system. Our 35 research groups study the function of the nervous system in health and disease, at the molecular, cellular, and network level. We now intend to strengthen our research profile in sensory neurobiology, broadening our scientific portfolio to the study of developmental aspects as well as cellular and network organization of specific sensory systems using animal models. This will also provide an ideal complement to clinical research on sensory function currently carried out at Karolinska Institutet. We are in the new Biomedicum building, which hosts a multidisciplinary environment with five basic science departments and top-level core facilities.
The sensory nervous system is a part of the nervous system responsible for detecting and processing sensory information. The sensation of our movement and location in space via proprioceptive and vestibular systems and our ability to hear are key for our interaction and connection with the world surrounding us. The research field on sensory systems has expanded in recent years, mainly due to the rapid development of novel methods in molecular biology. The research should be experimental and include large scale single cell technologies, mouse genetics, and neuronal network analysis and the application of these methods to study the biology of the mammalian sensory organs.
The subject of this professorship includes the application of state-of-the-art methods in order to identify and describe cellular and circuit mechanisms in animals involved in sensory transmission with relevance to health and mental disease and with particular focus on hearing, proprioceptive and vestibular systems. The professor is expected to act as principal investigator with delegated responsibility for grants, staff, work environment and other administrative duties at the department. The position also involves education at basic, advanced, and doctoral levels, as well as administrative academic duties. Collaboration with other groups at the department, at Karolinska Institutet and internationally, as well as outreach to the general society, are expected.
To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent scientific expertise and good pedagogical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).
Assessment criteria
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).
For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.
It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown excellence in:
(1) research on the biology of hearing, proprioceptive and vestibular sensory systems, with publications in top scientific journals with the applicant as senior author.
(2) application of single cell technologies, advanced computational analysis, mouse genetics and molecular biology to study developmental principles and heterogeneity of mammalian sensory systems, as well as their alterations.
It is meritorious that the applicant has documented track-record of funding from highly competitive national and international grants and is expected to pursue research at such a level that significant funding can be ensured in the future, sufficient to support the activities.
The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
