Karolinska Institutet, Department of Clinical Neuroscience

- with focus on education and research

Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) consists of five divisions that conduct research and education in neuroscience, from the molecular level to the societal level. The department has about 380 employees and more than 200 registered doctoral students. The work at the department is to a large extent integrated with the clinical activities at Karolinska University Hospital, St. Erik's Eye Hospital and Stockholm County's healthcare.

The Division of psychology has about 80 employees, of which many are engaged in the psychology program, provided at the division since 2007. The research is carried out in 17 research groups, focusing on clinical and preclinical research in psychology (https://ki.se/cns/forskning-vid-sektionen-for-psykologi). The psychology program at Kl is based on scientist-practitioner model, which means that students must gain good methodological skills and knowledge in order to ensure scientifically based clinical work. Within the framework of the psychology program, courses are given where knowledge of health psychology, clinical psychology and evidence-based treatment is conveyed.

Description of the subject area

Knowledge in clinical psychology and applied health psychology is increasingly in demand and is expected to increase. Within the framework of health psychology, a biopsychosocial approach is used where medical, psychological and environmental factors affecting the individual are taken into account. Research in health psychology focuses on understanding how individuals' cognition, emotions and attitudes, interacting with the environment and disease states, affect mood and quality of life, and on how to establish sustainable lifestyle changes for a better mental and physical health. There are some psychological treatments that are efficacious in treating health psychology related conditions, such as acute stress, chronic pain, and sleep disorders.

Your mission

The employment includes both teaching and research. The holder of the Senior Lectureship will be responsible for the psychology program's courses on health psychology and preclinical integration, contribute to the development of new courses related to the subject area, and teach within clinical courses where health psychology is included. The holder of the employment is also expected to pursue his/her own line of research in health psychology.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise and good scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.

Teaching experience within CBT and experience of responsibility for courses within health psychology is a requirement, as is broad experience of clinical treatment research in health psychology, as well as good knowledge on treatment processes. As the Senior Lectureship largely consists of teaching clinical aspects and will include collaboration in care settings within the framework of teaching and research, a further requirement is that the applicant has a Master of Science in Psychology, as well as clinical experience.

The applicant must have documented research experience in clinical health psychology.

To be employed, it is also required that the applicant has very good knowledge of Swedish and English.

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (3), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.2.2 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

When assessing the pedagogical skills, the scope and quality of teaching in health psychology will be taken into account.

When assessing scientific skills, we place emphasis on the quality of research in health psychology.

When assessing clinical skills, psychologist licensure is highly meriting.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
