The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) is a department with a strong focus on basic science. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology. CMB is located in Biomedicum, a new interdisciplinary research center designed to concentrate much of the experimental research conducted at Karolinska Institutet Campus Solna under one roof to promote collaboration. Biomedicum houses approximately 1,200 researchers and other personnel and allows expensive equipment to be shared and utilized more effectively.
The area of research in Björn Andersson group is the use of genomics and bioinformatics to study organism biology, with a focus on infectious agents. The main projects are comparative genomics in parasitic disease-causing protozoa, including trypanosomes, Giardia and Plasmodium, together with follow-up functional studies, and broad screening to study the human microbiome, with a particular focus on virus identification.
We now offer a postdoc position to a motivated and qualified applicant with a strong background in both bioinformatics, computational methods and data modelling, and experience of laboratory research work in molecular biology. The position requires the ability to handle and analyze complex genomic datasets using bioinformatics methods, and to follow this up with laboratory studies with the aim to develop diagnostic tests. Experience of research on tropical diseases is a merit.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
To be eligible, a doctoral degree in molecular biology and infection, including bioinformatics, or a corresponding foreign degree, is required.
When applicants are graded, we place particular importance on scientific skill. Documented skill in bioinformatics and data modelling are merits. It is also important that the applicant has good knowledge of computational methods and programming. It is also important that the applicants have documented skill within molecular biology laboratory work, such as PCR, cell culture and similar. Very good ability regarding the English language, both spoken and written, is required. An ability to work independently is of importance.
